He served more than 11 years on active duty in the Marine Corps, attaining the rank of Major, and spent several years as a military lawyer in the criminal defense office at Camp Lejeune, one of the busiest defense offices in the Marine Corps. He also served as Deputy Staff Judge Advocate to the commanding general, advising on UCMJ matters, administrative military law, and Marine Corps and Department of Defense regulations, including serving as a voting member of the weekly Family Advocacy Program Incident Determination Committee.
